(There are 92 episodes total, and 27 total manga right now but are making more as we speak)
Gon a 10 yr old boy who lives with his stepmother Mito-san, told him that his parents were killed in a accident. After being saved by a hunter(a person who searches for rare and mysterious items) named Kite, he told Gon he is searching for his teacher Ging Freecss (a.k.a Gon's dad). Gon wonders why does mito-san lie to him. Kite tells him he can take the hunter exam when he is 12.
Gon explains to mito-san, that he wants to take the hunter exam, at first mito-san disagrees but then she agrees.(Under one condition, gon has to fish the monster fish.) Gon caught it and can now go take the exam.Gon meets with a guy named Leorio,when gon wanted to know how to get to the ship that leads to Dole island.(Note: Leorio also wants to become a hunter, and said to gon the ship is the Kaijinmaru). Later, on the ship they (gon and leorio) meets a guy named Kurapica(who also wants to be a hunter). Kurapica did not call Leorio "Leorio-san", and leorio challenged him to a duel. No one won because a guy was falling off the ship and all 3 of them saved the guy. After the passed 2 more tests, the navigators are now taking the gang (gon, leorio, kurapica) to the examination center. In the examination center, Gon and Kurapica meet a guy named Killua, who helped Leorio before the first part of the examination center.
The first part of the exam, is where everyone must run past a foggy forest and get to the main building. The gang (Gon, Leorio, Kurapica, and Killua) passed with only 5 minutes left. During the second part of the exam, everyone had to make sushi and could not make it, so everyone failed (the judge said). Later the president came and said to redo the test. So, she said ok and so the gang passed. The gang now fly to the next stage on a blimp. Anita, a girl who failed the last part, sneaks aboard to get revenge on killua for the death of her father. The hunters capture her, the chairman offers to free her if gon and killua manage to take a ball from him. Anita escapes and attacks Killua, which he came close to killing anita, but killua stopped because gon would get mad at him. Gon makes the chairman use his left leg and both hands and is satisfied. Part 3 of the exam is to get down from the tower alive.
The gang is forced to team w/ tonpa & their test is to win 3/5 battles against prisoners. Tonpa takes the first match, but gives up. After the battles, they had to get out of the tower which had 2 paths: one long path and one path that can take 3/5 people. So, Leorio and tonpa start fighting, the gang chose the longer path and destroyed the wall between axes so they can fight on. The chairman interviews the 9 remaining, (Gon, Kurapica, Leorio, Hisoka, Hanzo, Pokkle, Gittarackur, Bodoro, Killua) for the final test. He asks who are they interested in fighting out of the nine. Hisoka and Kurapica fight in the first round. In the middle of the battle, Hisoka whispers something to Kurapica and admits defeat. (Kurapica is now a hunter) Hanzo and gon must fight now, Hanzo injures him several times including a broken arm but gon will not admit defeat. Hanzo and Gon continue fighting, Gon will not concede even if hanzo kills him. Hanzo is forced to accept defeat because of Gon's attitude. Gon is knocked out during the match, later satotz explains that he is a hunter now, hisoka defeated bodoro, Hanzo defeated Pokkle, Killua conceded to pokkle.
After the exam, the whole gang (except Killua) became hunters. (Note: The examination happened at episode 26-30.
They all go to the airport, all split up and will meet again in 6 months at yorknew city. Gon and Killua decide to fight pro to train and make money so the enter a 250 story high Heavens Arena. (Note: the person who wins makes a few million dollars.)

Gon now goes home with killua, and finds a tape recording of his father, then finds a Rom card with little information about greed island. So they go the yorknew city and got more information about greed island but need alot of money to buy. Gon wants to buy a mobile phone and is helped by Leorio. He also helps raise funds by allowing people to pay for arm wrestling w/gon, who easily beats everyone. ************************************************************************
Basically, the story ends when gon and killua fly to a player called "nigg" which gon believes is an alias of his father, Ging.
Gon never finds his father in the Anime, but i think he does in the manga. Any way i think this is a good story
